Q: "I ran a marathon three months ago and now struggle to motivate myself to do anything. I'm told this is normal, but I don't want to lose all my fitness! Any suggestions? Clara (aged 30)"
- A: Clara, you're right this is normal and very common. Anyone who has trained for an event or occassion often loses their drive or motivation once their initial goal is achieved. All you need to do is find a new one! Without a goal it's hard to keep reminding yourself why you're training so when you're de-motivated it's much easier to fall of the wagon.
If you're struggling to find a new goal and need extra motivation I'd suggest training with a friend or group of friends to keep you on track. In my experience with training small groups, people are less likely to quit on the last few reps or push even harder in general as we all have that little competitive edge in us (and also a bit of pride!) Get in touch and find out more about my Group Personal Training sessions. They're fun, cost effective and most importantly effective! (Jo Richards)
Q: "I'm trying to lose weight. I'm always hearing about good and bad fats, but if I want to lose weight should I just cut out all fat?" Lydia (aged 32).
- A: In a word, no! Fat has an undeserved reputation as a diet food that is bad for weight loss and health. The truth is, good fat is absolutely essential for good health. By good fat, I mean non-saturated fat - both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated. This type of fat or oil has numerous health benefits.
I would recommend the following fat sources. For cooking, choose extra virgin olive oil. For salads, choose from flax oil, canola oil, soy oil, extra virgin olive oil, wheat germ oil, walnut oil and hemp seed oil. Eat regular helpings of oily fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna. (Matt Lazenby)
